Interpretations of the Figure 2005, a regional juried exhibition of works exploring the conceptual use of the figure in contemporary art, opened at the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center Gallery at the University of Indianapolis on Monday, February 14, 2005. The biennial event is open to artists who reside in Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois and Kentucky. Media include painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, ceramics, sculpture and mixed media. This year's exhibition displays artwork from each state in the region. Out of nearly 300 works entered, 57 pieces were selected for the exhibition. The works were juried by the Department of Art and Design faculty and were chosen for their interesting and diverse approach to the figure. The exhibition represents a wide variety of interpretations of the figure. The department hosts this exhibition every other year to bring to the campus examples of what artists in the region are doing with the figure. The exhibition is used as a teaching tool in the Department of Art and Design to enlighten students and the University community as a whole on the various approaches artists may take on the figure.
